We arrived early evening and found a great restaurant Trattoria DI Baccala on the sea front where we had an excellent meal and beautiful bottle of the local etna wine Cerneca named after a small locally bred dog. Plus lots of the facciamo de noi – made by the restauranteur – the mandarin version of Limoncello called Mandarino – half a bottle later fantastico!!
Sleep comes easily LOL Out cold..
Morning brought the most spectacular of sights Mt Etna was erupting. It started around 4am. By the time we got to the top at was it was just steam and smoke and a bit of an anticlimax. the pictures of it erupting ( not mine) are spectacular. The drive up to the main station -17k from the last village Nicolosi- was easy difficult steep and scenic and not necessarily in that order!
We took the cable car up to 2600 mteters but we had missed the real action although I don’t think they let you get too close when its erupting
After some photos and a walk around on the lava tracks we headed back down the mount – smell the brakes – and headed for the beautiful town of Taormina about 50ks away.
