Agrigento and the Vallee Dei Templi

This was part of our adventure  we were really looking forward to most. Having visited many Greek temples, Parthenon & Korinthos and also at Paestum  in Italy, Valle Dei Templi at Agrigento is regarded as one of the true wonders of the ancient Greek world.  Their ability to create the most amazing cities, buildings and unique architecture is just breathtaking.

Founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century B.C., Agrigento became one of the leading cities in the Mediterranean world. Its supremacy and pride are demonstrated by the remains of the magnificent Doric temples that dominate this ancient town, much of which still lies intact under today’s fields and orchards.  Selected excavations also highlight  the later Hellenistic and Roman town and the burial practices of its early Christian inhabitants. There are 6 temples two of which are absolutely stunning!

Its a huge expanse which to walk literally takes hours.  The city and temples sit high on a valley overlooking the sea about 4ks inland.  There is a natural escarpment upon which they built a wall to protect themselves.  It was 16 miles long surrounded the entire city  and still in evidence in many parts today.

Its best seen in real life to get some idea of its proportion and majesty. Here is a video link that shows it much better than my photography
